A college... deep in the countryside

A few years ago, we started a college: the "Cedar College of Education". The college is accredited to the North West University, one of the largest universities in South Africa, which means that we teach the same courses. We prepare teachers in a 4 year Bachelor of Education (B. Ed.) course. The Cedar College of Education is special in that we have students from all over the world. This creates a unique multicultural atmosphere. Amongst our students are representatives from the following countries: Germany, Netherlands, Sudan, USA, Belgium, Rwanda, Switzerland, Botswana, Lesotho, Russia, Swaziland, France, Romania and Namibia.

The Vice-Dean, Dr Ilsa Vermaak PhD, used to have the highest position at the Department of Education before joining our college. Physicist, internationally recognised for her work, she received the Merrill Lynch Innovation Award in New York

The "Thabitha Adult School" offers to disadvantaged adults the possibility to learn the basics of reading and writing in Zulu, their mother tongue. Further courses are offered in basic English and a number of other skills useful for job creation or employment, like computer courses (how to use Word, Excel, etc.).

The school is fighting against ignorance and illiteracy. It makes it easier to access knowledge in science and techniques and to modern teaching methods. Tabitha Adult School started at the beginning of the 90's and has trained hundreds of people who did not have the privilege of learning to read or write.

Health: care to the terminal ill AIDS patients

For many months now, terminal ill Aids patients who were unable to find help at the hospital or among their family, have been arriving at the mission to seek help as a last resort. This is why we have decided to build a new complex of buildings to take care of them. Our "Emseni centre", opened at the end of 2005, is part of this new complex. The terminal ill Aids patients are accompanied with attention and solicitude. They find here the comfort they need so much and that nobody gives them anymore.

For the time being, the first building can accommodate 30 women. But the objective is to build an entire complex that will ultimately accommodate hundreds of Aids patients who suffer from abandonment, rejection and the greatest loneliness.
